Have you created an About section on your profile that is talking to the people you want to speak to – or are you quietly turning them away?
Might explain why they’re not engaging? 🤔
Let’s set the scene first.
Someone lands on your Profile and are presented with your Banner, Photo & Headline.
These form the ‘Introduction Card’ at the top of your profile – essentially, your ‘Shop window’ to attract attention & deliver a first impression.
Next they see your ‘About’ section – here you get the chance to expand on that first bit of ‘kerb appeal’ and then inform & engage.
Lots of characters to play with (2600) and options – do use the chance to add in 5 “Top Skills” to display as well.
📌 Great idea is to create 5 expanded Skills specially for this area! 😎
As for the main body of text, well this is your chance to:
✅ Make people want to connect
✅ Show them who you help and how
✅ Build trust before you ever message them
But too often, it reads like a CV or a corporate brochure.
So let’s fix that!
📌 Nail the 1st 3 / 4 lines
→ They show ‘above the fold’ (before you click on ‘see more’) so make them count. Tell a story, share a result or ask a question that makes them think. Hook them in!
📌 Use 1st person
→ I sincerely believe LinkedIn is still all about talking to people so speak to the person reading as you would in real life and make them want to hear more
📌 Be relevant to them
→ What’s in it for your reader? How do you help? What’s the benefit / change they get? You need to be talking about them … and how you can make their situation better
📌 Add solutions & examples
→ Can they see themselves as someone who can benefit from working with you or buying from you? Have you shown why other people chose to work with you?
📌 Give them space to read
→ Don’t make it a wall of text, people just won’t read it. Get some white space, add bullet points and paragraphs of max 4 lines, so they can take in the information
📌 Clear calls to action
→ What actions should they take next? Do you have a free offer or download something? Book a call? Visit your website? Tell them exactly what to do
🗝️ Extra Idea (if you’re struggling):
If you’re struggling to write it, speak it out loud as if someone asked, “So what do you do?” Record that, transcribe it (I use Voice Notebook) and polish it up. It’ll sound way more natural.
✨ Above all … be YOU!
Show personality. Add your style. Back it up with images, videos or PDFs in your Featured section – and then reference them in your About!
Because your “About” isn’t just about you.
It’s about why you’re the person they should talk to next.
Thoughts? Are any of those ideas things that you could add to your ‘About’ section today? 👇
